(North Korea, 5th) North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un inspected the test launch of strategic cruise missiles and the evaluation of anti-ship, anti-submarine, and air defense systems aboard the navy destroyer Kang Kon.
According to KCNA reports, these tests were conducted on Friday (July 3) as part of evaluating the combat systems of this newly built warship. The test content included checks on the Kang Kon’s target detection and information processing capabilities, integrated firepower systems, naval guns, automatic cannons, and electronic warfare equipment.
This warship had experienced a capsizing incident during its launching ceremony last year and has since been repaired by the authorities.
Reports stated that before watching the strategic cruise missile launch and other tests, Kim Jong Un received a briefing on the weapons assessment plan.

Kim Jong Un praised recent progress in weapons development and called for further efforts to enhance North Korea’s war deterrence and combat capabilities.
He also instructed officials to complete all tests of the Kang Kon within two months and hand it over for naval service.
At the end of last month, North Korea’s 5,000-ton-class destroyer Choe Hyon was officially commissioned, and plans were announced to deploy the sister ship Kang Kon as part of the navy’s modernization program.

Kim Jong Un has ordered that two ships of this class be built each year for the next five years and outlined plans to construct a 10,000-ton-class warship.
North Korea is increasingly emphasizing naval development, striving to strengthen what Kim Jong Un described as the weakest link in the country’s armed forces. The South Korean navy possesses more than a dozen vessels with a displacement over 5,000 tons, while the North Korean navy has only two.
