A 13-year-old boy in Australia demonstrated an “extraordinary” will to survive in the raging open sea. In order to save his family trapped at sea, he took off his life jacket while swimming toward the shore and bravely swam for 4 hours to seek help, ultimately leading to the rescue of his loved ones—a feat that left rescuers deeply impressed.

According to international media reports, on January 30, the teenager was vacationing with his family in the tourist town of Quindalup, Western Australia. While his mother and two younger siblings were kayaking and paddleboarding in nearby waters, they were swept into the sea. Upon witnessing this, he swam 4 kilometers back to shore to alert authorities.

Western Australia police stated on February 2 that the boy called for help at 6 PM on January 30, after which police launched a large-scale search and rescue operation at Quindalup Beach in Busselton Shire.

Marine rescue volunteer Bresland said the boy managed to save his family miraculously with his four-hour endurance swim. At 8:30 PM that night, a rescue helicopter finally spotted the stranded family about 14 kilometers offshore; they were desperately clinging to a paddleboard, drifting in the vast ocean awaiting help.

"The boy estimated he swam for the first two hours wearing a life jacket. Later, the brave young man felt he couldn’t make it back with the life jacket on, so he decided to take it off and continued swimming without it for another two hours."

Bresland described the boy’s performance as “extraordinary.” He said, "I thought, this is just incredible."

Inspector Bradley said, "His determination and courage ultimately saved his mother and siblings."
