23 Years Since Leslie Cheung’s Passing, The Wind Still Blows and the Sea of Flowers Remains

Published at Apr 01, 2026 05:18 pm
23 years ago on April 1st, “Gor Gor” Leslie Cheung leapt from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong, his brilliant life forever frozen at the age of 46. This year marks the 23rd anniversary of his passing, and on September 12 he would have celebrated his 70th posthumous birthday. His manager, Florence Chan, shared that she and Leslie’s friends and fans have walked hand-in-hand through the 5th, 10th, and 20th anniversary memorials, never absent. In 2016, on what would have been Leslie’s 60th birthday, she founded the “Gor Mi Club” (Leslie’s Fan Club), only hoping his voice, smile, works, and spirit would continue to be remembered by the world. For Leslie’s 70th birthday this year, she said she would do everything she could to gather friends and fans together for the grandest and purest memorial yet. She called out to Leslie in heaven: “The wind keeps blowing, never far away. September is for you.”

The sidewalk outside the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong had already been lined with fresh flowers, wreaths, and boards the day before, marking the 23rd anniversary of Gor Gor’s passing. Many members of the public and fans from various places arrived early to pay their respects. Hong Kong stars such as Anita Yuen and Leo Ku posted tributes in the early hours of the 1st. Leslie’s lifelong companion, Daffy Tong (Tong Tong), who used to release commemorative messages every death anniversary and birthday, this year only shared a memory of Leslie accompanying fans into 1997 at a concert on January 1st, and hasn’t posted since, which left some fans feeling a bit disheartened.
