IAEA: Iran May Resume Enriched Uranium Production Within Months

(Colombia, 29th) — CBS News reported on the 28th that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Grossi stated that despite multiple Iranian nuclear facilities being damaged by attacks from the United States and Israel, Iran could “within months” start producing enriched uranium.
On the 22nd local time in Iran, the U.S. bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi said the facilities were “severely” damaged, but specific details remain unclear. Meanwhile, U.S. President Trump insisted that Iran’s nuclear program has been set back by “decades.”
However, Grossi stated: “Some facilities are still there.”
According to an interview record released on the 28th, Grossi said the previous day: “You know, they could possibly get several centrifuge cascades up and running, and begin producing enriched uranium, in a few months or perhaps even less.”
Another key issue is whether Iran was able to move part or all of its stockpile of approximately 408.6 kilograms of highly enriched uranium—enriched to 60%, above civilian levels but still below weapons grade—before the attacks occurred. If further refined, this would be enough to produce more than nine nuclear bombs.
Grossi told CBS News: “We don’t know where these materials might be. They could have been destroyed in the attacks, or they could have been moved… We need to find out, confirm what is there, where it is, and what has happened.”
Currently, Iranian lawmakers have voted to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, and Tehran has also refused Grossi’s request to inspect the damaged facilities, especially Fordow, the site of the main uranium enrichment facility.
