UK Prime Minister Starmer announced his resignation on the 22nd.
Starmer made the announcement while delivering a statement about his future outside Number 10 Downing Street in London.
Starmer said that the question the UK's Labour Party is considering is whether he is the best person to lead the party into the next election. He stated that he has "heard" his party's "answer" to this question and "gladly accepts it."
Starmer said: "I will resign as leader of the Labour Party." He indicated that he will continue to serve as UK Prime Minister until a successor is chosen.
In May this year, Labour suffered a disastrous defeat in the local elections, and calls for Starmer to step down have grown louder.
According to a previous report by The Observer, due to support rates plummeting amid scandals and policy reversals, as well as strong intra-party rivals winning in parliamentary by-elections, Starmer has privately admitted to his staff and cabinet members that he can no longer maintain his position as prime minister.
The media gathered outside the Prime Minister's residence early on the 22nd, waiting for Starmer to speak. After several hours of silence that morning, his team finally broke the quiet by setting up a podium outside Downing Street. Several cabinet ministers, including Deputy Prime Minister Lammy, were present to listen to the prime minister's address.
Starmer's resignation statement means that the UK is about to welcome its seventh prime minister in nearly a decade.
