(Bandar Seri Begawan, 13th) To promote traditional Chinese culture and advance the inheritance and development of calligraphy art in Borneo, Red Wolf Media & Culture, Chung Hwa Middle School Brunei, and the Brunei Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Cultural Association will jointly organize the 'Borneo Calligraphy Competition.' This initiative aims to build an exchange platform for calligraphy enthusiasts from Brunei, Sarawak, and Sabah, discover outstanding calligraphy talents, and bring the fragrance of ink into the lives of the younger generation.

This competition is open to all residents of Borneo, with six main categories: Open Category (ages 19+), Novice Challenge Cup (ages 18 & under), High School Group, Junior High School Group, Senior Primary School Group, and Junior Primary School Group.

Among these, the Open Category and Novice Challenge Cup will be conducted through on-site writing; student groups may complete their works at their respective schools or calligraphy associations but must provide a video of the writing process as proof.

The award ceremony and the on-site competition for the Open Category and Novice Challenge Cup will be held on August 8, 2026 at the Peace Hall of Chung Hwa Middle School Brunei. At the same event, calligraphy masterpieces from artists in Brunei, Sarawak, and Sabah will be exhibited, and a calligraphy lecture will be held, inviting 30 students with a strong interest and potential in calligraphy to participate.

Regarding the competition rules: Open Category entries must include the artist’s signature and seal and use full-size xuan paper (69cm × 138cm); High School and Junior High School groups must use half-size xuan paper (34cm × 138cm); Primary School groups should use quarter-size xuan paper (34cm × 69cm).

The panel of judges will consist of experienced calligraphers from all three regions. Scoring criteria include 30 points for font structure, 30 points for brush technique, and 40 points for composition and layout. Points will be deducted for missing, incorrect, or invented characters.

For awards, the top ten in each group will receive prizes: one Gold Award, one Silver Award, and eight Bronze Awards.

The Open Category monetary prizes are: Gold Award 150 BND, Silver Award 100 BND, and Bronze Award 50 BND; Novice group: Gold Award 80 BND, Silver Award 60 BND, and Bronze Award 40 BND. High School group: Gold Award 60 BND, Silver Award 40 BND, and Bronze Award 30 BND; Junior High School group: Gold Award 40 BND, Silver Award 30 BND, and Bronze Award 20 BND; Senior and Junior Primary groups: Gold Award 30 BND, Silver Award 20 BND, and Bronze Award 10 BND.

The organizers will provide subsidies to calligraphy associations in Sarawak and Sabah to help promote the event and purchase xuan paper. The xuan paper used at the Brunei competition venue will be uniformly supplied by the Brunei Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Cultural Association and stamped with the association’s official seal.

The back of each entry must be marked in pencil with the participant’s name (in Chinese and English), group, school name, nationality, contact number, and the name of their instructor.

Registration is open effective immediately. For details on the deadline and work submission, please contact your local calligraphy association or the main organizers. The organizers warmly welcome all calligraphy enthusiasts in Borneo to actively participate and join this grand event together.
