Vietnam Airlines Plane Suspected to Have Skidded Off Runway During Takeoff, Circles for Two Hours Before Returning to Munich

(Vietnam, 16th) — A Vietnam Airlines passenger plane reportedly skidded off the runway during takeoff, then circled in the air for more than two hours to burn fuel before returning to Munich Airport in Germany.

According to Reuters, flight tracking website Flightradar24 showed that this Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787 aircraft was involved in the incident on Saturday (August 15). Passengers later evacuated using slides, and the fire brigade rushed to the scene.

Vietnam Airlines issued a statement saying that the flight was originally bound for Hanoi, but after takeoff, it returned to the departure airport due to a “technical issue.” “The crew followed all necessary procedures and landed safely at Munich Airport. Passengers and crew members are all safe.”

Vietnam Airlines added that they are coordinating with relevant authorities and all parties to inspect the aircraft.

Munich Airport stated on its website that the airport had closed its northern runway and reminded travelers that some flights may be affected.

According to Flightradar24 data, the closed northern runway was used for landings, not the southern runway used for takeoffs.

Munich Airport and Boeing have not yet responded.
