China will convene an informal meeting of the United Nations Security Council next week to condemn the United States for bullying behavior and "casting a shadow over global efforts for peace and development" due to the "weaponization" of tariffs by the US.
The Sino-US trade war continues to escalate, with President Trump's imposition of high tariffs on Chinese imports met with a tough response from Beijing.
The meeting will take place on April 23, and China has invited all 193 UN member states to attend. The "concept note" for this informal meeting states: "All countries, especially developing ones, are victims of unilateralism and bullying," explicitly criticizing the US for increasing tariffs.
China explicitly criticizes the US for increasing tariffs, stating, "The United States uses tariffs as a tool of maximum pressure, severely violating international trade rules and causing significant shocks and turmoil to the world economy and multilateral trade system, casting a shadow over efforts for global peace and development."
The US Mission to the United Nations referred reporters' inquiries to the State Department, which has yet to respond.
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development said on Wednesday that global economic growth could slow to 2.3% due to trade tensions and uncertainties, further fueling recessionary trends.
