Hollywood actor Eric Dane, who rose to fame with the long-running TV series 'Grey's Anatomy', shocked the world in April this year by revealing his diagnosis with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). For the first time, he spoke about the progression of the disease in an interview on 'Good Morning America'. He said, “I started feeling some weakness in my right hand, but I didn’t pay much attention to it. I thought maybe I was just using my phone too much, sending too many messages, making my hand tired.”
Eric said, “But a few weeks later, I realized the situation was getting worse, so I went to see a hand specialist, who referred me to another hand expert, and then I kept getting referred to different doctors. Each one thought the symptoms were far beyond their expertise.”
After a long period of 9 months filled with referrals and treatment, he was finally diagnosed with ALS. He said, “I will never forget those three letters. As soon as I wake up, it’s there with me. This is not a dream, it’s a nightmare.” It has been a year and a half since his diagnosis, and his right arm has lost function. He is very worried the symptoms might start spreading to other parts of his body.
Eric said, “I still have one arm that I can use, but my right side has no sensation at all.” He indicated that the function on his left side is slowly deteriorating, that it is disappearing, and possibly within a few months, his left hand will become unusable. He said, “I can still walk now, but I am really worried about my legs. It might not be long before I can no longer walk.”
Eric and American actress Rebecca Gayheart have two children and filed for divorce in February 2018, ending their 14-year marriage. However, they reconciled and restored their marriage relationship in March this year. Eric expressed emotionally that because he has been diagnosed with ALS, his ex-wife was willing to stay by his side, becoming his wife again to accompany him through the next chapter of his life.
