The Russian official announced the addition of 9 countries to the BRICS group. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated at a regular press conference on the 24th that the BRICS family welcomes partner countries, marking a new level of BRICS cooperation. The representativeness of the BRICS mechanism has been further expanded, and its appeal and influence are more evident, becoming an increasingly important platform for promoting solidarity and cooperation among the 'Global South'.
According to a report by the Russian Satellite News Agency on the 23rd, Russian Presidential Assistant Ushakov stated that Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Uganda, and Uzbekistan will officially become partner countries of BRICS on January 1, 2025.
Mao Ning expressed that China is willing to work with BRICS members and partner countries in an open, inclusive, and cooperative spirit for win-win outcomes, expanding pragmatic cooperation in various fields, promoting the high-quality development of 'BRICS Plus' cooperation, and advancing the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.
Ushakov noted that responses from another four countries regarding the invitation are expected soon. However, he also mentioned that although the doors of the BRICS organization will not be closed to like-minded partners, an unrestricted expansion would overburden the BRICS countries, despite more than 20 countries expressing interest in dialogue with BRICS.
The BRICS cooperation mechanism was launched in 2006, initially composed of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2011. In 2024, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Ethiopia will join.
Russia will assume the rotating presidency of BRICS starting January 1, 2024.
