The TV adaptation of the iconic classic novel, ‘Harry Potter’, has been confirmed to premiere in Christmas 2026. However, following the release of the trailer, British actor of African descent Paapa Essiedu, who plays Professor Severus Snape, received a large number of death threats. In response, British police have confirmed the situation and are closely tracking the source.
In a recent interview with The Times, Paapa admitted that he has received messages on social media platforms like Instagram, including threats such as ‘Quit this role or I’ll kill you’ and ‘I’ll come to your house and kill you.’ He confessed that his mood was indeed affected to some extent, but it has also become his motivation: ‘I think about how, as a child, I imagined riding a broomstick at Hogwarts, and how kids like me can now see themselves in that world. That gives me even more motivation not to be intimidated.’
After the news broke, police in Hertfordshire, UK, who are responsible for security at the series’ filming location, said that they have obtained information related to the death threats. Although Paapa himself has not filed a report, the police will continue to monitor the situation and stay in contact with Warner Bros. UK Studios. Additionally, the production crew has hired a professional security team and has also given the actors training on social media safety.
