(Thailand, 1st) The Thai government held a special cabinet meeting on the 30th, appointing Phutthan as the caretaker cabinet's acting prime minister.
After the special meeting concluded, the appointment was announced, along with the new secretary-general to the prime minister. The meeting also approved a transitional action framework to ensure that the caretaker cabinet fulfills its duties and maintains stability within the scope of its authority.
On July 1, Thailand's Constitutional Court announced the suspension of Petongtan from exercising the duties of prime minister. On July 3, the Thai government held a cabinet meeting, authorizing then Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Phutthan to fully act on behalf of the prime minister.
On August 29, the Constitutional Court ruled by a 6-3 majority that suspended Prime Minister Petongtan's actions in relation to the phone call with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen violated relevant constitutional provisions, and officially removed Petongtan from the office of prime minister.
According to the Thai Constitution and relevant laws, when the office of prime minister is terminated, all cabinet members must also step down, and the House of Representatives will be responsible for electing a new prime minister. During this period, the acting prime minister will lead the remaining cabinet members to continue fulfilling caretaker duties until the new cabinet takes office.
The Thai House of Representatives has issued a notice that meetings will be held from September 3 to 5 to elect a new prime minister, based on the list of candidates submitted prior to the May 2023 parliamentary elections.
