(Yangon, 21st) The terrorist organizations formed by the Kachin Independence Army and the People’s Defense Force in Kachin State, Myanmar, have been deliberately sabotaging regional development, disrupting government administrative mechanisms, and undermining local security, launching repeated acts of destruction in recent times. On February 12, the two organizations attacked Myitkyina Airport using FPV suicide drones.
On the night of February 20 at 8:12 pm, the two terrorist organizations launched another attack. An ATR-72-600 aircraft operated by Myanmar National Airlines had just finished boarding at Myitkyina Airport and was preparing to fly to Mandalay. The aircraft was undertaking an important civilian transport task and had no connection to military affairs. The attackers maliciously used FPV suicide drones to launch an attack, attempting to cause civilian casualties.
During the incident, the aircraft's nose, midsection, and tail suffered minor damage from bomb shrapnel. Security personnel quickly evacuated those on board to a safe area and carried out rescue and assistance operations. Fortunately, no passengers or crew members were injured or killed.
This deliberate attack on civil aviation is a blatant violation of the Geneva Conventions and international law, and is characterized as a war crime. The incident has sparked strong condemnation from the public and all sectors of society, with widespread outrage at the terrorist actions. Security forces have stated that they will continue to carry out regional security operations and take effective and firm countermeasures.
