Shanghai Medical Team Creates Miracle, Saves Globally Rare 'Internal Decapitation' Patient

Recently, China's Shanghai Changzheng Hospital treated a critically ill patient suffering from "internal decapitation," creating a medical miracle. The patient’s neck was severely struck by a mechanical arm, resulting in extensive dissociative dislocation of the cervical vertebrae, severe spinal cord contusion, and torn neurovascular structures, leaving the patient in critical condition.

According to comprehensive reports from Chinese media on the 18th, Professor Chen Huajiang, director of the cervical spine surgery department at Changzheng Hospital, stated that the patient's injuries are extremely rare, with no similar surviving cases found in domestic or international literature. The surgery faced high-risk challenges such as vertebral artery injury, massive bleeding, and cerebrospinal fluid leakage; even a slight error could have resulted in the patient’s death. The medical team subsequently collaborated with experts from emergency, critical care, and anesthesiology departments to develop a meticulous surgical plan.

During the surgery, doctors precisely cleared the hematoma, skillfully repositioned the dissociated cervical vertebrae, and innovatively adopted the "satellite steel plate" fixation technique to enhance cervical stability. After three hours, the surgery was successfully completed. Postoperatively, the patient's vital signs became stable, consciousness recovered clearly, and they are now able to sit up with the assistance of family members, showing positive neurological improvement. Chen Huajiang stated that the team will continue to challenge the limits of medicine in the future, bringing hope to more critically ill patients.
