(Bandar Seri Begawan, 29th)—The Brunei Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Cultural Association was invited by the Meragang Sixth Form Centre (PUSAT TINGKATAN ENAM, MERAGANG) to successfully conduct a calligraphy workshop,
actively promoting the popularization of outstanding Chinese traditional culture and facilitating cross-cultural exchange.
The Brunei Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Cultural Association, upon the warm invitation of the Meragang Government Pre-University Centre, co-organized a unique Chinese calligraphy workshop at the school yesterday.
The event, with the theme of “Experiencing the Charm of Calligraphy, Popularizing Chinese Culture,” aimed to bring the art of calligraphy into the campus and allow more teachers and students from various backgrounds to experience its distinctive appeal up close.
The Association attached great importance to this promotional activity and the school expressed deep appreciation, emphasizing that this was a historic first-ever Chinese calligraphy workshop providing insight into thousands of years of Chinese cultural history. The association’s president Yang Zhensheng personally led the team, with acting president Yu Qingzai, vice president Bao Pingsheng, and senior committee members Fang Lili, Chen Aizhen, Fang Xiufei, and Zheng Xiaoling jointly assisting as instructors, providing an accessible introduction to calligraphy for the staff and students.
In the brief two-hour workshop, nearly fifty participants—including Vice Principal Mr. Akmal, Mr. Sahwal, and many curious teachers and students—participated enthusiastically. The activity started from an introduction to the history of Chinese characters and progressed to the basics such as grip techniques and stroke writing. Under the patient and detailed “hands-on” guidance of the association members, participants carefully practiced by imitation, personally experiencing the rhythm of the brush on rice paper and the beauty of the ink’s changing shades. The atmosphere was focused and lively, fully reflecting the appeal of cultural popularization activities.
At the end of the workshop, a special segment was set for showcasing and evaluating participants’ work. After on-the-spot creation and judging, eight students stood out with their outstanding calligraphy works and won the Excellence Award. Especially encouraging was the strong interest and achievements demonstrated by five participating teachers, whose works also received recognition and Excellence Awards. Teachers and students winning on the same stage was the best testament to the effectiveness of this cultural outreach activity.
School representatives gave high praise for the successful organization of the workshop. They said such activities are valuable practices for implementing multicultural education and broadening students’ global horizons, providing teachers and students with an excellent platform for direct engagement with Chinese culture and effectively promoting cultural understanding and exchange. Summarizing the event, Association President Yang Zhensheng emphasized: “This workshop is an important step in our association’s efforts to popularize Chinese culture. Seeing the Meragang pre-university teachers and students participate and learn calligraphy so enthusiastically is truly inspiring. It fully proves that art knows no borders and culture resonates universally. The association will continue to build bridges, reaching deeper into campuses and communities to make this ancient and beautiful art of calligraphy more widespread in Brunei, benefiting a broader population, actively promoting mutual learning between cultures, enriching the tapestry of multiculturalism, and letting the art of Chinese calligraphy shine brightly.”
