China Successfully Develops Tandem Flexible Solar Cells, Providing Power Security for Spacecraft

According to China Central Television (CCTV) on the 14th, Professor Zhang Xiaohong's team at Soochow University has achieved a significant breakthrough in the field of flexible solar cells by successfully developing flexible crystalline silicon–perovskite tandem solar cells, overcoming core challenges regarding the efficiency and stability of such cells. The report stated that the new solar cells provide reliable power supply for long-term operation of spacecraft and space data centers, and related results have been published in the international journal "Nature."

Zhang Xiaohong said that this technology enables both crystalline silicon and perovskite materials to become flexible and stacked together, allowing each layer to capture different bands of sunlight, thereby absorbing a broader spectrum of solar energy than traditional single-layer cells and significantly improving photoelectric conversion efficiency.

Zhang Xiaohong also mentioned that photovoltaic solar cells are now widely used in spacecraft, and as space environments cannot access any terrestrial power grids, photovoltaic power supply has become the inevitable choice for supporting the long-term operation of spacecraft and space data centers. This achievement lays the scientific and technological foundation for the large-scale application of flexible photovoltaic technology.
