57-year-old Chinese-American actress Lucy Liu recently revealed in an exclusive interview with People magazine that in the 1990s, she visited a doctor after discovering a lump in her breast. However, the doctor misdiagnosed her with cancer, leading her to undergo an unnecessary surgery.
Lucy Liu said that at the time she didn't think too much about it, but admitted that she was, in fact, really scared, as there was no internet back then and information was not as accessible as it is today. The doctor simply felt the lump and declared it to be cancer, without performing any further examinations such as an ultrasound or mammogram. The doctor immediately scheduled surgery to remove the lump, and only afterwards did she learn it was not cancer.
Reflecting on the experience years later, Lucy Liu stated, “I think that was the moment when I started to learn to speak up for myself.” She admitted that upon being told she might have cancer, she didn’t question the diagnosis further. Even though friends suggested she consult other specialists for a second opinion, at that time she felt it wasn’t necessary—she believed the doctor must know what they were talking about.
