(Miri, 13th) Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Datuk Sebastian Ting allocated RM150,000 to assist in the refurbishment of the Miri Holiday Villa basketball court's painted floor, replacement of basketball hoops, and addition of spectator seats and other facility works.
Datuk Sebastian Ting's service team, including Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Piasau Branch Youth Chief and Councillor, Leslie Lau, along with Miri City Council's Engineering Department officials and the Village Development and Security Committee, visited the Miri Holiday Villa basketball court yesterday to understand the upcoming projects, which include floor repairs, basketball hoop replacement, and seat additions.
Liu Yijie stated that Datuk Sebastian Ting supported the application for funding through the 2024 Rural Transformation Plan and that the RM150,000 grant was approved last year to enhance the basketball court's facilities for local residents, providing the community with a well-equipped recreational area.
He said that this covered basketball court was completed in 2023, aiming to allow residents to participate in sports competitions, social gatherings, and various health activities.
“Previous improvement projects included building covered facilities, sidewalks, and children's playgrounds; the current phase involves refurbishing and repainting the surface, replacing basketball hoops, and adding benches along the court to improve site conditions, offering residents a quality sporting environment.”
Leslie Lau mentioned that Datuk Sebastian Ting has been committed to promoting a healthy lifestyle over the past nine years, prioritizing the use of Rural Transformation Plan funds to construct leisure parks, running tracks, and basketball courts, providing comprehensive sporting facilities.
He said it is crucial to maintain a healthy body through exercise, physical and mental training, and community gatherings, as regular sports participation can strengthen the body and enhance psychological well-being, thus contributing to an overall healthy lifestyle.
