Chinese influencer Mao Jie (Roxycatsis) recently shared her experience riding the London Underground on IG, only to be mocked by Hong Kong actor Anthony Wong, who called her a 'country bumpkin' and said she 'only goes to poor areas.' In response, Mao Jie filmed another video directly refuting Anthony Wong's remarks, and advised him to 'learn to be a decent person before learning skills.'
'I've been criticized by a Hong Kong film king!' In her response video, Mao Jie pointed out that she had previously studied and worked in the UK, and visits every year. On her recent trip to the UK, she took the London Underground and spoke about some of the dirty conditions onboard. As a result, Anthony Wong commented: 'A country bumpkin is a country bumpkin, only goes to poor areas. Who asked you to take that line?'
Mao Jie said, 'Poor people are people too, so why can't poor people take clean subways?' She was very angry after seeing Anthony Wong's comment. What’s more, she was riding the Northern line, which passes through London's financial district, Silicon Roundabout, King's Cross Station, Google’s European HQ, etc.—passengers on this line have the 3rd highest average salary in London.
Mao Jie pointed out that Anthony Wong left another comment, correcting her for calling it the 'British Empire': 'Great in Great Britain doesn’t mean big, it means good. Learn some English, would you? What is this—calling it the Da Qing Empire [“Da” meaning large/big in Chinese]?' So, in Anthony Wong's mind, the British Empire should really be called the 'Good British Empire.'
Mao Jie said she’s met a lot of celebrities, and advised Anthony Wong: 'Learn the art, but first be a good person. With good character and virtue you’ll go far.' As for Wong saying she should learn English, she fired back by speaking English for over a minute, retorting that Wong should first study history, and maybe also learn the basics of respect and equality. He should also realize that British people are dissatisfied with their subways too: 'Riding the tube doesn’t make us inferior to you. I just want to know, if I paid for a ticket, why can’t I complain about a dirty public transport system?'
