(Bandar Seri Begawan, 3rd) The United States and Brunei held their first U.S.-Brunei Strategic Dialogue in Washington, D.C., co-chaired by U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Alyson Hook, and Brunei's Second Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dato Erywan. Both sides celebrated the elevation of bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership, built on over 175 years of friendship.
Under Secretary Alyson Hook and Dato Erywan exchanged views on regional and global issues, and explored opportunities to expand cooperation in the areas of economy, security, and law enforcement. They reaffirmed their shared commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, as well as to upholding freedom of navigation and lawful trade in the South China Sea.
Under Secretary Hook and Dato Erywan placed particular emphasis on expanding professional military education through the newly announced International Military Education and Training Program, and pledged to continue collaborating against transnational crime, human trafficking, and cyber fraud.
Meanwhile, both sides discussed expanding U.S.-Brunei trade and economic relations and efforts to create an open investment environment for U.S. companies.
The Under Secretary reiterated that the United States is committed to supporting U.S. companies as trusted, long-term partners in Brunei’s economic development.
Both sides pledged to hold follow-up consultations to advance the initiatives identified during this inaugural Strategic Dialogue, and agreed to hold the next meeting in 2027.
