Ada Choi Only Plays the Lead; Studying in America Became a Turning Point

Recently, Ada Choi participated in the Chinese variety show "Sisters Who Make Waves 2025" (also known as "Sister Who Make Waves 6"), sparking heated discussions. In the show, she openly shared her past experiences, mentioning how she developed an arrogant mindset due to rising to fame too quickly, and even only wanted to accept leading roles. It wasn't until she made a major life decision at the age of 26 that she learned to let go and grow, paving a new path in her acting career.

Ada Choi graduated from the TVB Artist Training Class in 1984, and was promoted heavily upon debut. She played a leading role for the first time in the series "The Legend of the General Who Never Was," partnering with Alex Man, rapidly boosting her popularity and propelling her into the ranks of top actresses. However, she admitted that she was "a bit conceited" at the time, intent on playing leading roles only and completely uninterested in supporting or small roles. "I really thought I was something back then, and even thought I shouldn't take on any more supporting roles or any other types of roles." But she soon realized that this mindset was unhealthy.

At the age of 26, after her contract with TVB ended, Ada Choi decided to temporarily step away from the entertainment industry and went to the United States to study, hoping to rediscover herself through learning. She recalled on the show, "I got a bit lost when I entered the entertainment industry because I started off as the leading actress, which can easily cause one to lose direction. But after studying, it's like being a balloon that's finally landed, and I understood that I can't feel valuable only because the company promoted me." This study experience completely changed her mindset, leading her to rethink the essence of being an actor and her own self-positioning.

After returning from her studies, Ada Choi's attitude visibly changed. She became eager to take on various roles, regardless of screen time and character weight. She even took on parts with no names. This change led her to reach a new peak in her career, taking on roles in "The Greed of Man" and the character "Consort Yu" in "War and Beauty." She won two consecutive TV Best Actress awards for "Rosy Business," becoming the first actress in Hong Kong to win consecutively, achieving viewership and acclaim alongside professional recognition.
