Renowned Taiwanese poet Zheng Chouyu has passed away in the United States, at the age of 91. His famous poem “Mistake” contains the widely known line, “My galloping horse hooves are a beautiful mistake, I am not a person returning home, but a passerby.” In fact, pop diva A-Mei (Zhang Huimei) has a song that expresses her respect for Zheng Chouyu.
The late singer-songwriter Zhang Yusheng, who passed away at a young age, wrote the song “When I Start Missing You Secretly” for A-Mei. The song’s opening lyrics, “This time when I leave you, there should be wind and rain,” were inspired by Zheng Chouyu as a tribute, drawn from his poem “Farewell,” which also begins with “This time when I leave you, it is wind, it is rain, it is night.”
Additionally, Zhang Yusheng's song “Dizzy” features lyrics: “For a moment I lost my words, unless it's the spring curtain that remains closed through March, it makes me shed tears enough to brew wine.” The phrase “spring curtain that remains closed through March” is a reworked line from Zheng Chouyu's famous poem “Mistake,” which contains, “the spring curtain in March remains closed.” Besides having his work turned into songs, Zheng Chouyu was also nominated for the Golden Melody Awards as a lyricist.
