Chiew Choon Man Visits National Housing Company

(Miri, 9th) The Member of Parliament for Miri, Chiew Choon Man, recently conducted a working visit to the National Housing Company in Kuching to review the implementation of the government’s housing plans for the Miri community.

He said, as the Member of Parliament for Miri, I am highly concerned and dedicated to addressing the increasingly severe housing issues in the region.

“Miri is a rapidly developing city that has attracted more residents through natural growth or migration from rural areas. As the city develops, the demand for quality, affordable housing also rises. Unfortunately, there are still low-income groups who are forced to live in slums because they cannot afford their own homes. Meanwhile, young people face the high costs of buying houses and starting family life in Miri.”

He pointed out that the current housing policies must keep pace with population growth and rising living costs. Therefore, I urge the construction of more affordable and low-cost housing in Miri to achieve the dream of homeownership for every family.

“I am grateful to the federal and Sarawak governments for the initiatives implemented so far. However, from observations and community feedback, these efforts are still insufficient to meet the growing demands of Miri's population.”

I urge the government to increase funding to further expand housing programs such as the People's Friendly Housing (RMR) scheme to assist more needy groups. Through the RMR program, anyone who is eligible and owns land can receive government assistance to build a house on that land and obtain a subsidy of RM20,000, with the applicant only needing to repay the construction cost in installments of about RM300 monthly over a period without interest. This measure is considered to alleviate the burden of those who genuinely need their own homes.

“To ensure that the people of Miri receive accurate information and fully understand the requirements and application processes of government housing programs, I will hold several town hall meetings in Miri. I will invite SPNB to present the loan plans in detail to the public. This initiative aims to ensure that every eligible individual truly benefits from the housing facilities provided by SPNB.”

I hope all parties can work together to ensure that residents of Miri are not excluded from the national housing agenda. I will continue to advocate for the demand for affordable housing throughout the Miri community and seek cooperation from all agencies (both state and federal) to intensify efforts to achieve the goal of "every family owning their own house."
