(USA, 2nd) Democrat Zohran Mamdani has been sworn in, officially becoming New York City's new mayor. He is also the first Muslim mayor in the city's history.
At the inauguration ceremony, Mamdani reiterated his campaign promises, stating he would pursue a policy agenda focused on safety, affordability, and prosperity, aiming to address the high cost of living faced by New Yorkers.
Mamdani belongs to the Democratic Party’s left-wing Democratic Socialist faction and was elected mayor in November 2025 by a landslide. His left-leaning background has attracted widespread attention, as well as criticism from Republicans.

Mamdani was born in Uganda, Africa, in 1991. He is of Indian Muslim descent and became a US citizen after immigrating to New York. In 2020, he was elected to the New York State Assembly.
Mamdani’s wife, Duwa Ji, is from Syria and works as an illustrator.
