On the 28th, US Democratic Senator Hassan urged Musk to stop transnational criminal groups in Southeast Asia from using Starlink services to scam Americans.
She cited recent reports stating that numerous transnational criminal organizations in Southeast Asia are using Starlink to defraud Americans.
She stated that, according to the US Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, these organizations have already defrauded American citizens of billions of dollars.
In her letter to Musk, she wrote: "However, although SpaceX's service rules allow for terminating access used for fraudulent activities, scam organizations in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos apparently continue to use Starlink. SpaceX has a responsibility to prevent criminals from using this service to target Americans."
She pointed out that, while most people may have noticed an increasing number of scam text messages, phone calls, and emails, they may not be aware that transnational criminals on the other side of the globe may be using Starlink to perpetrate these scams.
