The Miri Deep Sea Fishing Competition (MDSFC) was held from 1996 to 2006, mainly attracting fishing enthusiasts from Sarawak and some from Peninsular Malaysia and Brunei. In 2007, the inaugural Miri City International Deep Sea Fishing Tournament (MCIDSFT) was held, attracting participants from Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and China. With increased international promotion, especially in China, the tournament's influence gradually expanded, with participant numbers increasing yearly.
From 2012 to 2019, anglers from Singapore and China frequently came to Miri waters for deep-sea fishing, particularly at Luconia Shoals. The tournament was forced to pause for four years due to the pandemic; now, the Miri Anglers Club has decided to officially return in 2025.
Historical participant statistics: 2010 had 110 participants, 2011 had 100, 2012 had 105, 2013 had 78, 2014 had 120, 2015 had 142, 2016 had 52, 2017 had 107, 2018 had 134, 2019 had 141, and the 2025 target is 100 participants.
