Online Rumors of Random Knife Attack in Shenyang Last Saturday

According to reports from Hong Kong media, there are online rumors that a random knife attack occurred in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China, last Saturday (April 4). A man allegedly injured people with a knife on the street. As of now, officials have not issued any announcement.


Based on reports from Ming Pao, online media “HK01”, and Sing Tao Headline, multiple clips circulating online indicate that the incident mainly took place near Nanjing Street Third Elementary School in Heping District, Shenyang, and around the market area close to Taiyuan Street.


Videos circulating online show the perpetrator wielding a knife, attacking random people along the road beside the market. According to reports, the man was subdued by police after the incident. However, some local netizens and eyewitnesses claim that after injuring others, he allegedly fled to a nearby building and fell to his death.

As of now, Shenyang officials have not made any public announcement or clarification regarding the matter.


Earlier, there were reports of a suspected indiscriminate attack in Zhoukoudian Town, Fangshan District, Beijing, on March 29. Sing Tao Daily, quoting videos circulating online, reported that on the morning of that day, a bulldozer drove into the Dahanjicun market in Zhoukoudian and knocked down multiple people, with eyewitnesses claiming seven or eight fatalities. No official statement has been made on this incident thus far.

On April 1, Yin Li, Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, emphasized at a safety production work deployment meeting the need to maintain social security and to sternly crack down on violent and terrorist acts. Xinhua News Agency reported the following day that Chen Wenqing, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission, during a recent inspection in Liaoning, called for balancing rights protection with social stability and for taking strict precautions against extreme incidents.
