(Miri, 26th) The Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) held its annual general meeting and new executive committee election today at the Cityrise Hotel.
The association's president, Chai Chon Chin, stated in his speech that this year is a significant year for NSJA as we are about to celebrate our 50th anniversary. This is not only an important milestone for our association but also a testament to the collective efforts of all journalists. I hope we can work together to plan and host the most grand and meaningful celebration to honor the contributions of all our predecessors over the past 50 years and inspire the new generation of journalists to uphold the professional spirit of journalism.
He said, besides, this year is also the last year of the two-year term for this executive committee, and we will conduct elections to choose new executive committee members. I hope all elected members can shoulder their responsibilities and serve the association wholeheartedly, ensuring that NSJA can continue to grow, remain dynamic, and provide more support and opportunities for its members. A responsible and visionary leadership team is key to the association's continuous advancement.
"In this era, the journalism industry is facing unprecedented challenges. The rise of social media, changes in news dissemination methods, and the impact of information explosion require us to continually learn and improve ourselves to maintain professional competitiveness in this fiercely competitive environment. Unfortunately, despite the association providing many training opportunities, such as the digital journalism courses from Curtin University, member participation remains low. I hope in the future, everyone will actively engage in these trainings to enhance professional abilities, adapt to industry changes, and meet greater challenges."
He also said, however, it is encouraging that our members have been very active in sports activities. Whether it's volleyball, pickleball, or other sporting events, everyone participates enthusiastically. This not only strengthens our cohesion but also helps us maintain physical and mental health amidst our busy work. As journalists, we face high pressure and fast-paced work, so having good physical condition and a healthy lifestyle enables us to best engage in our work. Therefore, I encourage everyone to continue exercising and make health a part of our careers.
"Although NSJA is not primarily a social welfare organization, our main responsibility is to protect our members' interests, this does not mean we are indifferent to society. On the contrary, we always uphold a spirit of societal care and actively participate in various charitable activities. For example, we have organized blood donation events, ghost nets clean-up campaigns, and other beneficial societal projects. These activities not only demonstrate NSJA's social responsibility but also show the social influence of our journalist group. I hope we can continue to take on social responsibilities and contribute to society."
He hopes everyone continues to unite and work together to promote NSJA to new heights. The media plays a crucial role in society, and as journalists, we must bear the responsibility of disseminating truthful information and maintaining journalistic ethics. I believe that as long as we stick to our original intentions, keep learning, and innovate constantly, NSJA will continue to thrive and become one of the most influential media groups in society.
At the meeting, the new executive committee of NSJA was also announced, with Chai Chon Chin re-elected as the President.
