(Miri, 13th) Miri MP Chiew Choon Man issued a statement today expressing his gratitude for the significantly reduced airfare prices on the eve of this year's Lunar New Year. He noted that this is good news for the large number of people wanting to return home for reunions and is a result of the collaboration between the government and airlines.
Chiew Choon Man shared that 10 years ago, as a student, he experienced the burden of high airfare prices. "At that time, to avoid high fares, we usually had to book tickets at least six months in advance. The round-trip airfare between Kuala Lumpur and Miri often reached RM600 to RM700."
He pointed out that according to the latest inquiry, this year, on January 27 or 28 (one to two days before the Lunar New Year), a one-way ticket from Kuala Lumpur to Miri costs only about RM200 and above (provided by AirAsia or Batik Air). Tickets for January 26 are even as low as RM100 and above.
"The airfare for returning to Kuala Lumpur from Miri is equally affordable, with one-way ticket prices on February 1 or 2 also maintained between RM100 to RM200. This means that the total expense for returning home for the new year this year is about RM300 to RM400, which is lighter than before."
Chiew Choon Man noted that the more affordable airfare is mainly due to the active cooperation between the government and airlines. He mentioned that during the peak period of the Lunar New Year, many airports in the country extended daily operating hours to over 20 hours, increasing the number of flights to meet market demand.
He specifically thanked the federal government and airlines such as AirAsia and Batik Air for their efforts in this regard, adding that this is an important measure to help people return home for reunions.
He called for similar measures to be extended to other significant festivals such as Hari Raya, Gawai, Deepavali, and Christmas. He pledged to continue focusing on this issue and ensure that related policies are further optimized to alleviate the economic burden on the people.
Chiew Choon Man emphasized that as the MP for Miri, he will continue to speak for the people to ensure that the efforts of the government and related parties effectively benefit every individual needing to return home to reunite with their family.
