(Bandar Seri Begawan, 18th) Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) has welcomed 1,097 new students for the 2026/2027 academic year, including 787 undergraduates, 169 master's students, 53 doctoral students, and 88 UniBridge program participants.
The orientation ceremony for new students was held yesterday morning at the UBD Chancellor Hall, during which the Vice-Chancellor also delivered a special speech to the new entrants of the UniSTART program for the 2026/2027 academic year.
Vice-Chancellor Hazri welcomed the new students to UBD and encouraged them to make the most of their university life—absorbing knowledge, growing as individuals, and shaping their character and sense of identity.
He also urged students to always strive for excellence, uphold UBD's values, and fully utilize all opportunities provided during their studies.
Hazri further called on students to let knowledge illuminate their lives, shape their personalities, and set serving society as the ultimate goal of acquiring knowledge.
He concluded his address with UBD’s motto, “Mendepan Bersama” (Forging Ahead Together).
As the starting point for the new chapter in students’ lives at UBD, UniSTART 2026 is a five-day development and orientation program designed specifically for new students.
Previously known as Freshers’ Week, UniSTART presents the first week of university life in a renewed way, emphasizing self-discovery, teamwork, and clarification of life goals.
Throughout the course, students will explore their own values and strengths, establish meaningful relationships, enhance personal resilience, clarify life objectives, and understand their roles as future UBD graduates.
One of the main features of UniSTART 2026 is the introduction of UBD’s four residential halls—Bentara, Panglima, Satria, and Adiwira—on the very first day. This aims to help students build stronger cohesion and a sense of belonging at the very start of their university journey.
The UniSTART 2026 program also complements UBD's GenBESTARI undergraduate curriculum. GenBESTARI adopts a holistic student-centered teaching approach, integrating academic studies with extracurricular activities.
GenBESTARI aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world, while continuing to uphold Bruneian identity and values.
UniSTART 2026 marks a new journey for the latest cohort of UBD students, who are about to embark on a university life focused not only on academic excellence, but also on personal development, building meaningful relationships, active community engagement, and fostering a strong sense of belonging.
