The 8th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) recently kicked off in grand style at MyTOWN, Kuala Lumpur, officially marking the start of a 9-day film gala.
The red carpet ceremony of the opening night welcomed filmmakers, jury members, and renowned artists from various countries, including Zizan Razak, Lü Yang, Tan Yong Jin, and Sangeeta Krishnasamy. The three festival ambassadors, Bront Palarae, Siti Saleha, and Daiyan Trisha, also shared their film stories.
MIFFest founder and chairperson Joanne Goh stated in her speech that this year’s theme, “Infinity,” symbolizes the limitless potential of cinema: “Film has the power to move, challenge, and connect hearts. In an increasingly divided world, film reminds us that we still share hope and emotions.” She also gave special praise to the selection committee and semi-final jury, thanking them for their professional contributions to the outstanding film lineup.

The opening film, 'Ninavau,' directed by Sabah filmmaker Bebbra Mailin, tells the story of a Kadazan woman facing internal struggles of identity and transformation on the eve of her family’s wedding, delicately portraying East Malaysian culture and the voices of minority communities. The film is an extended work from her original short film, now premiering in feature-length form.
