National Disaster Management Agency Hands Over Bailey Bridge to Sarawak Disaster Management Committee

(Miri, 11th) Sarawak Deputy Premier Dato Amar Douglas stated that transporting Bailey Bridge components is a significant task requiring proper coordination and cooperation from all parties.

He said that the components are currently packed in 12 40-foot containers and are being shipped from Port Klang to Miri. Therefore, I would like to thank Miri Port Authority, Miri Malaysia Terminal, Miri Terminal Management, and related personnel for their efforts in ensuring these containers are smoothly transported from the port to the Bekenu Engineering Bureau warehouse by January 6, 2025.

Amar Douglas made these remarks in a speech at the ceremony where the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) handed over the Bailey Bridge to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (JPBN). As he could not attend, his speech was read by Deputy Minister of the Sarawak Premier's Department Dato Gerawat Gala.

He pointed out that to ensure the quick and safe installation of the Bailey Bridge in Sarawak, 22 personnel will be sent to the Public Works Department in Sabah for training from January 13 to 19, 2025. Since we anticipate installing more bridges in the future, this training is crucial for ensuring the ongoing safety and efficiency of our infrastructure.

“It is noteworthy that the replacement of the bridge at Sungai Bale is just one of the many critical infrastructure issues we face in the Baram region. In the lower, middle, and upper areas of Baram, there are many wooden bridges and culverts on the original logging roads that urgently need replacement. With the reduction of business by logging concessionaires, they no longer maintain these bridges leading to the concession areas, which has left many communities unable to access essential services safely.”

He stated that there is an urgent need to take action to repair bridges and culverts in the Baram area, and we have called on public works to conduct a comprehensive inventory of all bridges and culverts, planning to gradually replace wooden bridges and upgrade existing metal bridges to ensure safe and reliable connectivity.

I hope today's event will provide the National Disaster Management Agency with a deeper understanding of the road connectivity needs of our rural communities. This event is a stepping stone to strengthening our cooperation, and I believe our joint efforts will continue to help the people of Sarawak recover from disasters and enhance the resilience of their infrastructure.

It is reported that the aforementioned Bailey Bridge will be installed in Kampung Long Banga in Marudi as traffic there was disrupted by floods in the middle of last year.
