(Kuching, 21st) Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin pointed out that the Sarawak Ministry of Transport is actively promoting the establishment of an efficient and integrated logistics ecosystem, aiming to turn Sarawak into a regional logistics hub.

He said that the logistics industry is the backbone of trade and investment, and for a vast and resource-rich state like Sarawak, it is an especially important driving force for economic transformation.

"To achieve this goal, we are implementing a series of strategic initiatives, including promoting the modernization and efficient operation of sea, land, and air transport, and optimizing ‘first mile’ and ‘last mile’ logistics connectivity, to better support industrial and trade development.”

Lee Kim Shin made these remarks while delivering a speech at the Hexagon Highs 20th Anniversary Dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching last night.

He pointed out that one of the current priorities of the Transport Ministry is to enhance cargo transport capacity at Kuching International Airport.

"The plan to rebuild the Kuching International Airport cargo terminal is aimed at resolving key issues of congestion, lack of space, and safety. The reconstruction plan includes expanding the truck parking lot to 18,000 square feet, improving cargo loading and unloading docks, adding driver rest areas and related facilities, establishing a dedicated operating area for DHL, and fully complying with safety standards set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM)."

Lee Kim Shin stated that this plan will not only help improve freight handling capacity and safety levels but also optimize the overall operational experience for logistics operators.

Data shows that Sarawak's total air cargo throughput in the first quarter of 2025 was 14,438 tonnes, an increase of 23.3% compared to 11,072 tonnes in the same period of 2024.

Lee Kim Shin emphasized that Sarawak's vision in the logistics sector is not limited to the reconstruction of Kuching International Airport, but will also continue to expand logistics infrastructure and service capabilities through a series of strategies, supporting the overall transformation of the state into a competitive regional logistics hub.
