GOVT SUGGESTED TO INTEGRATE AI, IOT AS SMART SOLUTION FOR FLOOD DISASTER MANAGEMENT

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 25 -- The Malaysian IoT Association has proposed that the government integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technology as a smart and cost-effective solution for flood disaster management in the country.

According to the association treasurer,  Pathmanathan Muniandy, a smart flood detection system capable of integrating multiple data sources would address the weaknesses of the current system and enhance flood forecasting by incorporating weather-related factors.

“For example, this system can process data from sensors that monitor river water levels, rainfall patterns, tidal data from the National Hydrographic Centre, and satellite images. This smart integration offers a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of flood risks,” he said in a statement to Bernama today.

Pathmanathan said the model is already in use by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) through a collaboration with the Google Flood Forecasting Initiative, and it has proven effective in improving the accuracy of flood forecasts in India.

He further explained that, unlike conventional systems, this technology, which relies on various sensors, can provide early warnings up to 48 hours before a disaster occurs, significantly enhancing the accuracy of flood risk detection.

“This technology should be used not only to prevent the situation from worsening but also to alert residents to take precautions,” he said.

He added that the use of AI enables the system to be continuously updated, which improves the accuracy and quality of predictions over time.

Pathmanathan also recommended implementing the system in phases, starting with high-risk urban areas before expanding to rural regions.

“In addition to integration with the National Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (PRABN), additional data from satellite images can also assist local governments in planning urban development more effectively,” he said.
