(Panama, 12th) The U.S. Embassy in Panama stated that as the Trump administration strengthens its stance against China in the region, the embassy will use American technology to replace the telecom base stations of Chinese tech giant Huawei.
According to Bloomberg's report on the 12th, the U.S. Embassy in Panama said in a statement that the U.S. government will cooperate with Panama's security department to install seven new telecom base stations with 'trusted American technology' over the next two years to replace previously installed Huawei equipment. The project will cost 8 million USD (33.88 million Malaysian Ringgit), funded by the U.S. government.
The U.S. Embassy in Panama stated: 'The United States is working to counter China’s malicious influence in our Americas region to make the American continent stronger and more secure.' The embassy did not specify which manufacturers' products will be used.
For many years, Huawei has consistently refuted the U.S. claims that its telecom products pose a national security risk to the countries using them.
