(East Timor, 24th) East Timor President Ramos-Horta announced that the country's highest honor, the 'Grand Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste,' will be conferred upon Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar.
This is East Timor's highest level of national honor, awarded in recognition of Anwar's longstanding advocacy and Malaysia's role in supporting East Timor's vision to join ASEAN.
Horta made these remarks during a joint press conference with Anwar.
In addition, Horta described Anwar’s visit as a testament to the long-standing friendship between the two countries, and recalled Malaysia’s steadfast support during East Timor’s struggle for independence.
He pointed out that his discussions with Anwar were constructive and forward-looking, including the prospect of increased Malaysian investment in the fields of agribusiness, tourism and renewable energy, as well as providing education and technical training opportunities for East Timorese youth.
Anwar said that this visit is of great significance, stemming from the countries’ shared history and Malaysia’s consistent support before and after East Timor’s independence.
He mentioned his many years of personal friendship with Horta, adding that the visit is both official and private in nature.
He emphasized priority areas in trade, investment, tourism, education and defense, and welcomed the participation of Petronas and Malaysian private enterprises in these fields.
“Your (East Timor’s) accession to ASEAN is only a matter of time. Malaysia looks forward to celebrating East Timor’s entry into ASEAN at this year’s ASEAN summit in October.”
