(Miri, 1st) Miri Hospital Director Dr Jack Wong stated that Miri Hospital has set a target of 13,000 blood donors this year to meet the growing demand for blood supply in the region.

According to the records of the Miri Hospital Blood Bank Center, 30.2% of the blood supply will be allocated to other regions to assist with urgent blood supply needs, including 6.8% for Sabah, 11.9% for government hospitals in various districts of Sarawak, and 11.5% for private hospitals.

Dr Jack Wong made these remarks during an interview at the first blood donation event of 2025, "Caring Blood Donation, Caring Society," co-organized by the Northern Sarawak Journalist Association, Miri Radio Station Leisure Club, and Shun Cheng Li Trading (Miri) Co., Ltd., at the third floor of Miri Boulevard Shopping Center.

He pointed out that as of December 23, 2024, the Miri Hospital Blood Bank Center had recruited a total of 8,786 people to respond to the call for blood donation, with 5,758 male donors and 3,028 female donors.

As for 2023, a total of 9,683 people donated blood, with 6,276 being male and 3,407 being female donors.

Dr Jack Wong said that there are currently 6,204 active blood donors in Miri, with 4,244 men and 1,960 women as donors.

"There are 1,487 new blood donors, with 762 men and 725 women."

He pointed out that the data shows that the community, volunteer blood donors, active donors, and new donors have made significant contributions to the total blood supply.

He stated that with the cooperation of social organizations and the support of enthusiastic blood donors at the Miri Hospital Blood Bank Center, Miri Hospital has consistently maintained an adequate blood supply to provide assistance to those in need.

Dr Jack Wong emphasized that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very important to have the physical fitness needed to respond to the call for blood donation, otherwise, one cannot participate in this charitable act.

He expressed gratitude to all the organizers, donors, Miri Red Crescent, and local shopping centers providing venues for the donations, for their contributions to the community in Miri.
