Malaysian Man Caught With 200,000 Brunei Dollars in Car, Unreported at Singapore Border

(Singapore, 30th) The Singapore Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) revealed in a Facebook post on the 30th that its officers successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large amount of undeclared cash into Singapore at Woodlands Checkpoint on the 23rd of this month.

The authority stated that a Malaysia-registered car was directed for further inspection that day. Officials discovered cash totalling approximately 200,000 Brunei dollars (equivalent to about 647,600 Malaysian ringgit) under the front passenger seat, in the trunk, and in a backpack.

Preliminary investigations show that the 54-year-old Malaysian male driver was suspected to have been entrusted by others to transport the large sum of cash into Singapore, but failed to declare it via the mandatory electronic system as required. The case has since been handed over to the Singapore Police Force for further investigation.

The ICA reminds the public that anyone carrying more than 20,000 Singapore dollars (or its equivalent in foreign currency) into or out of Singapore must declare it within 72 hours through the "MyICA" mobile application or the ICA website.

The authority emphasized that, as the "gatekeeper of the nation," ICA will continue to safeguard border security while ensuring smooth clearance for trade and travelers.
