The Malaysian Armed Forces will assist in the Thailand-Cambodia General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, which will be held in Kuala Lumpur from August 4 to 7.

The Armed Forces Intelligence and Strategic Communications Division stated in a press release on Saturday (August 2) that the GBC meeting aims to resolve the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute and is part of the ceasefire agreement brokered by Malaysia on July 28.

"Malaysia is the neutral location jointly chosen by Thailand and Cambodia to hold this GBC meeting. The agenda for the meeting will include the deployment of defense attachés as a temporary team and the Terms of Reference (ToR) for deploying an ASEAN monitoring group."

This ceasefire agreement, effective from midnight on July 28, was reached at a special meeting hosted by Malaysia following escalating tensions between the two countries, bringing them to the negotiating table.

The meeting was held at the Prime Minister's official residence in Putrajaya, chaired by Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Prawit jointly agreed to the ceasefire at the meeting to ease the ongoing tensions that had escalated over several weeks.

The two countries have long experienced diplomatic friction due to an 817-kilometer undemarcated border.
