Taiwan Ranks First! Beijing Sets Four Red Lines Ahead of Xi-Trump Meeting, Says US-China Must Fasten the 'First Button'

People’s Daily on Thursday (14th) published on page three an article titled “Striving to Explore the Correct Way for China and the US to Get Along in the New Era” written by Chinese Ambassador to the US, Xie Feng. Xie said that the history of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the US repeatedly proves that the two countries cannot afford not to communicate. Chinese President Xi Jinping and visiting US President Donald Trump held a summit, again demonstrating this point.

In the article, he wrote that both sides should establish a correct perception, saying that, “If one looks at the other from the narrow perspective of zero-sum competition, every issue becomes a ‘life-or-death struggle’; if one looks at each other from the broad perspective of a community of shared destiny, everywhere is an opportunity for cooperation.”

Xie Feng stated that differences should be properly managed. The US and China have different national conditions, and having differences is inevitable. The key is to respect each other’s core interests and major concerns. At the same time, “China has legitimate interests that must be safeguarded and principle bottom lines that must be adhered to.”

Xie emphasized that Taiwan, democracy and human rights, the path and system, and development rights are China’s four red lines. China’s sovereignty, security, and developmental interests cannot be violated.

He said that China requires the US to faithfully uphold the One-China Principle and the three China-US joint communiqués with tangible actions, to stop illegal and unwarranted containment and suppression of China in economic and technological fields, to stop indiscriminate checks, harassment, and deportation of Chinese students and scholars and other discriminatory measures, and to remove obstacles to the development of bilateral relations.

Xie went on to say that both sides should carry out cooperation in a wide range of fields, including diplomacy, economy and trade, law enforcement, military-to-military exchanges, science and technology, artificial intelligence, public health, and people-to-people exchange.

He stated, leader-to-leader diplomacy has always been the “compass” and “anchor star” of US-China relations. This year is a big year in US-China relations, and it is hoped that under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, not only will US-China relations stay steady and go far this year, but also the two sides will explore a new way for China and the US to coexist correctly in the new era, with mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.
