A 22-year-old man surnamed Lin from Taiwan voluntarily went to a Cambodian scam park to 'learn the tricks', and after returning to Taiwan became the head courier (carrying cash) for a fraud ring, in charge of overseeing couriers who handled in-person exchanges or withdrew illicit funds. To evade investigation, he averaged changing motels or hotels every two to three days to hide, but was ultimately caught by the Taichung City Criminal Investigation Brigade. Unexpectedly, when the police arrested him, Lin was woken from his sleep, and rather than worrying about the lawsuit, regretted with disbelief, 'I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to my many girlfriends.'
According to the Liberty Times report, Li Zhencheng, captain of the third team of Taichung City's criminal investigation unit, explained the case on the 5th, saying that the team had recently received a report from a woman who said she received a call from a 'prosecutor' informing her she was involved in a money laundering case and needed to hand over all the cash in her account for investigation. She believed it and handed over nearly one million NTD in two installments. The police realized this was a classic 'fake prosecutor scam' and formed a special unit to closely cooperate with the victim, setting up a sting operation.
The fraud ring, remaining mysterious, instructed the victim to go to a hotel room in Taoyuan for the handover. After deploying in advance, when two couriers, both surnamed Lai and Lin, age 18, arrived to collect 300,000 NTD from the victim, the police immediately revealed themselves and arrested them. Upon tracing back, they locked in on the mastermind behind the operation, namely Lin, the 22-year-old courier leader.
Investigation showed that Lin had recently gone all the way to Cambodia’s 'scam park' to learn various scam techniques and how to monitor couriers. Upon returning, he became the head courier; suspicious by nature, he would change motels or hotels every 2 to 3 days to evade capture. After several days of surveillance, police finally traced him to a hotel in the central district and obtained a warrant from the prosecutor's office.
When police raided him recently, Lin was woken from sleep and, in his confusion, was arrested and brought to justice. Unexpectedly, his biggest regret was not his impending imprisonment, but instead, he lamented: 'I really regret not having the chance to say goodbye to my many girlfriends.' His reaction was both laughable and exasperating. After questioning, the case was sent to the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office on suspicion of fraud and money laundering. Upon further investigation, prosecutors believed Lin was seriously implicated and at risk of colluding or repeating his crimes, so detention was approved.
