Taiwan's entertainment industry continues to be rocked by the "draft dodging scandal." Former member of the group "Da Mouth" and Golden Bell Best Actor Hsueh Shih-ling voluntarily went to the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office on the 4th to provide an explanation. After questioning, prosecutors released him on bail of NT$300,000 (about RM40,000) on suspicion of violating conscription regulations and forging documents. However, whether he is actually involved in draft dodging still remains to be clarified by prosecutors and police. In response, his manager has not answered calls or messages and has not responded to any questions.
In fact, after the draft dodging wave erupted this year, Hsueh Shih-ling was asked about military service when he attended an event in May. Appearing sincere at the time, he explained that he had been exempted from service, and said that he was actually preparing to enlist after university graduation but was only diagnosed with familial hypertension during the physical examination. "I failed the medical check. After three rounds of tests, the doctor said it was quite dangerous, so I didn't serve." He said he was somewhat stunned when he first heard the news, but later learned that his grandfather, father, and uncle were also exempt from military service due to familial hypertension.
Coincidentally, in the second season of the Taiwanese drama "The World Between Us," Hsueh Shih-ling also played a character with a draft dodging storyline. In the drama, Hsueh and Guei Mei Yang play a mother and son in a political family; Yang tries to persuade him to avoid military service and enter politics right after graduation, even asking Joe Chen, who plays a doctor, to help forge a medical certificate. The parallels between the drama and real life have sparked much public discussion.
