Northern Coastal Highway gamechanger and catalyst for northern development

LIMBANG: The Northern Coastal Highway (NCH) project is described as a ‘gamechanger’ that will catalyse development in the northern region and propel Sarawak on the right track to be a developed state, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the new highway reflects Sarawak’s commitment towards adopting cutting-edge technology and environmentally sustainable construction practices.

Abang Johari said that the NCH incorporates advanced engineering methods such as Highway Information Modelling (HIM), which ensures construction aligns with Sarawak’s environmental sustainability goals.

HIM is an integration of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to create a digital representation of highway projects.

“In the past, roads were built by cutting through hills. Today, we use new methods that protect the environment. Some sections of this highway will be elevated with strong piling systems to preserve our natural landscape.

“Even if the cost is higher, it is worth it because we do not want to disturb nature,” he said in his speech at the launch of the project here today.

The RM6.8-billion project, he said, is fully funded by the Sarawak Government, and underscores the state’s financial resilience and unity under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) administration.

“As long as we remain united, we can fund projects worth billions on our own.

“This highway will not only connect Limbang and Lawas seamlessly to the rest of Sarawak and Sabah, but also strengthen our ties with Brunei Darussalam,” he added.

He noted that the NCH will complement other major road networks such as the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR), and further enhance border connectivity through upgraded immigration, customs, quarantine and security (ICQS) complexes equipped with facial recognition technology.

“These new facilities will make cross-border movement faster and more efficient, attracting more tourists and stimulating the local economy,” he added.

The Premier also linked the project to Sarawak’s broader strategy of sustainable growth powered by renewable energy and technological innovation.

“Sarawak is already recognised for its renewable energy leadership. Soon, electricity will be supplied to Sabah through the Limbang-Lawas Grid, and we are also in talks to export power to Brunei,” he said.

Abang Johari also expressed confidence that the Northern Coastal Highway will be a defining catalyst for progress in the region.

“This catalytic road will prove that Sarawak is on the right track, and Lawas and Limbang will shine as new stars in Sarawak, particularly in the northern region,” he said.
