South African police said on Sunday (10th) that five rhino poaching suspects were shot dead on the night of the 9th in the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal province.

A police spokesperson stated that, acting on intelligence, the police conducted operations in the Hluhluwe area of the province and inspected suspicious vehicles. After intercepting a vehicle suspected of involvement in poaching activities, the occupants opened fire on the police, and five people were shot dead in the ensuing exchange. Police confiscated a rifle fitted with a silencer and two handguns. No police officers were injured in the operation.

The incident occurred near the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park in South Africa. This park is one of South Africa's important rhino reserves, but has long faced threats from poaching.

In February this year, South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment published a report stating that the number of rhino poaching incidents in South Africa in 2025 had decreased by 16% compared to the previous year. Efforts to combat poaching and the illegal trafficking of wildlife have yielded results, with the number of rhinos poached in KwaZulu-Natal province dropping significantly, from 232 in 2024 to 97 in 2025.
