With US National Security Advisor Woltz transferring to the position of Ambassador to the United Nations, President Trump announced on the 1st that Secretary of State Rubio will be acting as the National Security Advisor. Since the Trump administration took office on January 20th, this marks Rubio's fourth chief position, effectively making him Trump's go-to troubleshooter, even being described as the 'Secretary of Everything' by the 'New York Times'.
Rubio's other two positions are Acting Director of the 'United States Agency for International Development' (USAID) and Acting Archivist of the 'National Archives and Records Administration' (NARA).
In prior US government history, only Kissinger held both Secretary of State and National Security Advisor roles from 1973 to 1975 during the Nixon and Ford administrations.
The New York Times also used Chinese President Xi Jinping as a comparative figure, noting that Rubio now holds more positions than Xi Jinping, who has the three main titles of President of China, General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission.
Looking back, during the 2016 Republican presidential primaries, Rubio warned that Trump was a 'threat.' Even after Trump won, their relationship remained somewhat strained. Eight years later, Rubio not only became a fervent follower of America First but also a fighter for Trump's second term. Before announcing the change in the National Security Advisor position, Trump praised Rubio as 'amazing' and mentioned, if there were issues, 'he would solve them.'
