Advocating ESG for Sustainable Development: Ling Chiong Sing Urges Companies to Pay Attention

Published at Mar 16, 2025 12:40 pm

(Miri, 16th) Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Ling Chiong Sing emphasized that companies must pay attention to and implement Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies. This not only helps reduce financial and reputational risks from supply chain disruptions, environmental disasters, and social responsibilities but also enhances competitiveness, attracting more investors, consumers, and partners.

Speaking at the 2025 Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Member Representative Conference, he noted that with increasingly stringent ESG regulations from governments around the world, companies should adapt to regulations and international standards early to avoid fines or market access barriers due to non-compliance. A good ESG strategy can also improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, increase employee productivity, and achieve long-term financial growth.

"In an era of highly transparent social media, corporate behavior is easily scrutinized. Actively promoting ESG policies helps shape a positive brand image and avoids negative public opinion pressure from environmental pollution or improper labor conditions. Therefore, ESG is not just a global trend but a key to maintaining competitiveness and sustainable development."

Kuala Baram Port Deep Development Plan Officially Launched

On another note, Ling Chiong Sing pointed out that since 2014, the Chamber has proposed the "Kuala Baram Port Deepening and Dredging Project" every year at the member conference. It is gratifying that the first phase of the project was officially launched in September 2024, marking a new milestone in Miri Port's development.

This plan includes the construction of two 6-kilometer-long breakwaters and the deepening of the channel to 5 meters to meet and satisfy more than 70% of the current port's daily operational needs.

"Looking towards 2030, Miri Port plans to reach an international standard, further extending the breakwaters to meet international deep-water pier standards."

Ling Chiong Sing stated that this project is not only a significant breakthrough in Miri's infrastructure development but will also inject strong momentum into the economic development of the northern Sarawak region. In the future, Miri Port will become an important hub for industries such as logistics, manufacturing, energy, tourism, and agriculture, offering unlimited business opportunities for local companies.

He said the Chamber will continue to strive for member companies' opportunities to participate in the port economy, promote industrial upgrades and transformation, and support Miri in developing into an international deep-sea port hub city.

"Looking to the future, the Chamber will continue to uphold the spirit of unity, innovation, and mutual benefit, working hand in hand with member companies to contribute more to Miri's economic prosperity and social development."
