How Did Mrs. Xiang Get Her Hoarse Voice? She Reveals Calling Out for 16 Hours During Labor “Ruined Her Voice”

76-year-old Charles Heung and his wife, “Mrs. Heung” Chen Lan (real name: Chen Mingying), have been married for over 45 years and have two sons. Recently, Mrs. Heung mentioned her experience giving birth in a short video, recalling that she unexpectedly went into labor early when giving birth to Jacky Heung. The doctor who was supposed to perform her C-section was out of town and couldn’t make it back in time; the nurses could only instruct her to control her breathing, leaving her in pain for 16 hours before she finally gave birth. She joked that her current hoarse “smoky” voice is all because she screamed so much during labor it ruined her voice.

In a video sharing her childbirth experiences, Mrs. Heung said that as a woman, in order to achieve the same success as men, one might need to give even more. She recalled that after giving birth to both her children, she never did postpartum confinement (a traditional Chinese practice). Even though she already had a bit of money back then, she was keen on returning to work, thinking that foreigners didn’t do postpartum confinement and managed just fine. So after natural delivery, she basically went back to work the next day.

Mrs. Heung said that she screamed until she could no longer make a sound, causing Charles Heung to think something had happened and hesitate to sign the surgery consent form. A nurse then explained that the original chief doctor couldn’t make it back and they had to urgently call another doctor for help. Mrs. Heung laughed and said that when Jacky was “suctioned” out, his whole head was elongated, giving her a fright, but fortunately, the child’s head returned to normal later. The first thing she said upon waking up was, “I’ll never have another child!” to which Charles Heung wholeheartedly agreed.

Someone nearby was shocked and asked, “You were in labor for 16 hours?” Mrs. Heung replied, “Yes, and that’s how my voice turned out like this. It wasn’t always like this, hahaha, I shouted it hoarse.” She also joked that her voice is now so “distinctive” that sometimes when she receives calls from strangers, they address her as “Sir” at the beginning, which infuriates her and makes her curse and hang up the phone in anger.
