Gathering in the Millennia-Old Capital to Discuss AI Issues: ASEAN-China Media Urged to Seize Transformational Opportunities

What kind of sparks will the collision between the millennia-old capital of thirteen dynasties and emerging technologies produce?

Co-hosted by the China-ASEAN Center and China International Publishing Group, the 2025 China-ASEAN Media Cooperation Forum was held in Luoyang, a city with over 5,000 years of civilization, focusing on how ASEAN member countries and Chinese media can effectively utilize artificial intelligence (AI) and address its negative impacts.

This recently held forum, themed "Promote 'Intelligence' and 'Quality', Spread 'Numbers' to Write a New Chapter of Cooperation," aims to harness the power of AI to foster regional media cooperation.

Shi Zhongjun, Secretary-General of the China-ASEAN Center, pointed out that the media industry should uphold the authenticity of information as the highest standard in applying AI technology, and collectively oppose using AI to spread false information, manipulate opinion, and create social chaos due to value differences or political intentions.

In his speech at the forum, he mentioned that as sources of information and guides of public opinion, media have significant social responsibilities, especially in the digital technology era.

"Therefore, the development of artificial intelligence technology should aim to benefit people and promote social welfare, advocating for peace, fairness and justice, democracy, and freedom as universal values, promoting exchange and understanding between different cultures and civilizations."

Du Zhanyuan, Director of China International Publishing Group, stated that Chinese and ASEAN media should use AI to build new media productivity, explore the application of AI in the full news process, improve media work efficiency and level, enhance the depth, breadth, and warmth of communication, and strengthen mutual understanding among people.

"Pragmatic cooperation should be carried out in platform co-construction, technology application, resource sharing, and standardized application, paying attention to preventing potential problems like misinformation and information cocoons, injecting more 'safety genes' into artificial intelligence."

He emphasized that amid the wave of a new technological revolution and industrial transformation, seizing the historical opportunity of AI-enabled media transformation has become the only way to enhance communication capabilities and promote civilizational exchange.

The forum also released the "Joint Initiative on Applying AI Technology for Media Ecology Governance Between China and ASEAN", aiming to better leverage the role of media in connecting society and building consensus, and launched the "China-ASEAN New Media Sharing Program."

Since its inception in 2018, the China-ASEAN Media Cooperation Forum has been held for seven consecutive years.

This year's forum gathered 150 high-level government representatives, media personnel, and think tank experts from ASEAN member countries and China. The Malaysian Embassy in China chargé d'affaires, Noor Farlinna, and representatives from Bernama were also invited to attend.
