(Kuala Lumpur, 27th) Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar emphasized that the process of procuring defense assets must be transparent and prudent, and should be carried out based on priorities and actual needs.
He pointed out that the order of procurement priorities must be determined according to the real needs and professional capabilities of the Malaysian Armed Forces, rather than by agents or external companies.
He said that procurement practices not based on needs and professionalism in the past have led to various issues, including major scandals involving ship purchases as well as delays in construction projects.
“This procurement system must be corrected. It is not up to me to decide what to buy; that is the expertise of the armed forces. But the procurement priorities must be based on needs and professionalism—not determined by agents, external companies, or politicians.
“This year, the Ministry of Defense has the highest allocation, so everyone has a responsibility to ensure that expenditures are completely transparent, reasonable, and accountable, because all of this is the people’s money.”
He made these remarks during a speech at the Maritime Heroes’ Breakfast event held at the Royal Malaysian Navy Second Fleet Command in Sandakan on Saturday.
