(Miri, 8th) The old market (Tamu Lama) located on the banks of the Niah River in Batu Niah has been unused since it ceased operations, but its concrete pillar structure has shown cracks, causing concern and potentially endangering public safety.
Penghulu Pui Kuan Phen noted that he has observed elderly people frequently entering and sitting to rest at the old market. Without control, accidents could occur at any time.
"I suggest that the relevant authorities quickly close or cordon off the area with ropes to prevent the public from casually entering, as we cannot predict the structural condition. The pillars could collapse at any moment."
He urged the local government units to pay attention and inspect such idle old buildings located in public areas to ensure they do not pose potential hazards to residents.
It is understood that in the past, the old market was one of the markets selling fish and chicken. Although it is no longer in use, it still attracts some residents to linger.
